My father always taught me to believe: "Do what you love, and the money will follow." And from the time my grandmother taught me to sew, I've been passionate about sewing and creating with fabric and textiles.
I took sewing in high school. It was then that a friend fell in love with chic couture clothing, and I eagerly made her several custom outfits, which she loved. After that early success, I realized maybe I could make a living doing what I loved. I went door-to-door handing out flyers. My client base grew to include many fashion-conscious clients—including the late Doris Duke, who actually flew her clothing to me for alterations, (via private jet!), while she was vacationing. So many of my clients happily return, time and time again over the years. I've sewn Brownie badges on their Girl Scout sashes, fitted them for prom and altered their wedding dresses.
And then later, I've gone on to make window treatments for their first homes, and I've turned their wedding dresses into christening gowns for their babies. I even have some clients where I've begun the same cycle with their daughters. I've altered many wedding dresses to transform them into a christening gowns. This way, the client can keep the dress as a family heirloom for all the babies that come along. It’s one of my specialties, and I find it very satisfying to offer this service to my clients.
